Benefits of Using Tiles in Your Home
Choosing the perfect flooring or wall covering can seem daunting but I believe that tiles offer a range of benefits that make them an excellent choice for any room. Not only are tiles durable and aesthetically versatile, but they have the ability to enhance the look and functionality of your living spaces. In this journal entry, I’ll be exploring the five key benefits of using tiles in your home.
Made-to-Last and Durability
I’d say the biggest advantage of using tiles is their durability. Materials play an important role in this, opt for using tiles that are made from porcelain or ceramic because they’re incredibly resilient to life’s general wear and tear. Tiles don’t scratch, dent, crack or stain easily unlike wooden floors or carpet, which makes them perfect for high-traffic areas like hallways, bathrooms and kitchens whilst maintaining their appearance over the years. I appreciate that tiles can be a big upfront investment but with proper installation and maintenance, they can last for decades.
Styles and Designs
The beauty of tiles is that the design possibilities are endless. You can mix and match tile designs to create unique patterns that reflect your personal style or go full on maximalist with just one design. Sleek and modern can be achieved with more muted tones and larger-format tiles whereas traditional or rustic can be accomplished using certain materials such as terracotta or herringbone or Delft styles for example. You can finish off your project using tile trims which'll give it a professional and polished look.
Low Maintenance
Tiles are known for being low maintenance, which is a significant benefit for busy homeowners. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are usually sufficient to keep tiled floors looking pristine. For wall tiles, a simple wipe-down with a damp cloth is often all that is needed.
Hygienic
Unlike carpets and rugs, which harbour dust from pets and general human living, tiles do not retain allergens, helping to improve indoor air quality. Tiles, especially those with a glazed finish, are resistant to moisture, preventing mould and mildew growth, making them easy to keep clean and are therefore a good hypoallergenic option for your home.
Eco-Friendly
Ceramics in general use far less energy than metal and plastic to produce. If you choose to buy good quality tiles that'll last a lifetime, you’ll reduce the need to replace them, which is ultimately better for the environment. Tiles can also help with energy efficiency by keeping homes cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, minimising the need for additional heating and cooling.
