DELFT TILES
A Modern Visual Diary
Design truly becomes a language when it is stripped of unnecessary noise and allowed to tell a personal story. In our recent bespoke kids' bathroom project, we set out to prove that functional spaces don't have to sacrifice narrative for cleanliness. By reimagining traditional surfaces, our client transformed an everyday room into a quiet, curated sanctuary, a soft-hued canvas where childhood memories, whimsy, and heritage float effortlessly together. It is a space designed with longevity in mind; while the playful motifs capture the magic of youth today, the sophisticated palette and timeless materials ensure it’s a room the kids can grow into as they grow older, remaining just as relevant and cherished in the years to come.
Redefining the Canvas
To achieve a crisp, modern aesthetic, the client envisioned a smaller 10x10cm tile canvas completely free of traditional corner details. By deliberately stripping away the framing and corner flourishes that typically enclose Delft-inspired illustrations, we gave each motif total breathing room. These individual hand-decorated designs float elegantly across a soft off-white glaze, uncontained and beautifully suspended in space to create an open, expansive feel across the main bath wall.
The Serene Envelope
To balance the inherent playfulness of the storytelling, it was essential to ground the bathroom in a sense of quiet, tactile serenity. Our client framed the space using a thoughtful backdrop of honed beige stone and classic white panelling, creating a calm, understated architectural envelope. This design choice, visible in the lower half and alongside the built-in features, steps back just enough to let the artisanal tilework do all the talking.
Meaning in the Details
Without illustrations to frame them, the illustrations function like a curated scrapbook of family memories. Whimsical icons are scattered playfully around everyday fixtures; for instance, a vintage New York taxi, a scoop of ice cream, and a rocket ship orbit a classic nickel shower dial alongside a bold monogram 'E'. Nearby, charming details like a tiny stack of books and a delicate seashell add layers of texture to the room's hidden corners.
A Functional Narrative
Ultimately, this bathroom demonstrates how simplifying a format can amplify its meaning. In the recessed glass shelving, the crisp lines of the niche seamlessly integrate with the floating motifs, proving that custom design can be both highly functional and deeply imaginative. It is a beautiful reminder that when you clear away the clutter of conventional patterns, a wall becomes more than just a surface, it becomes a visible reflection of identity, memory, and joy.
